10 Days & The Measure of Success

Dear Cleo,

The exhibition goes live in ten days, my preparations are going well every picture has a frame and half of them are already bubble-wrapped, so it doesn't feel like there will be any last-minute panics, except for the panic in my own head that it will not be a complete success - which is made more difficult because I am struggling for a definition for the success of the exhibition...

The ultimate measure of success is that more people will get to see my paintings than subscribe to this blog and my Instagram account. This can only be a good thing as paintings in real life are much more impressive than pictures on the internet, as Benjamin states in “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” each artwork has an aura and needs to be seen in real life, goodness only knows what he would have made of the internet. In my humble opinion, that I can deem a painting complete enough to show to other people is the measure of success, the sale or otherwise is subject to a whole other set of dynamics that are beyond my control.

All the best,

Mickos

21 Sleeps

Dear Cleo,

The exhibition is getting scarily close! Much of the preparation work is now complete, with only two pieces to complete and a bit of framing to be done. The Light in a Box series, which so far has received minimal internet exposure is turning out to be a bit of a pièce de résistance, that I think has the ability to shock and delight.

There will of course be the last-minute scramble for the bits that have been totally forgotten, but hopefully not too many.

Only 21 sleeps now!

All my love,

Mickos
